Compact Substations and Enclosed Transformers: The Difference

Distinguishing an integrated distribution package from a transformer supplied within an enclosure.

An integrated distribution package

A compact substation can combine a transformer with medium-voltage switching, low-voltage distribution, metering, control and protection in one coordinated assembly. It therefore performs more functions than voltage conversion alone.

Transformer enclosure scope

An enclosed transformer primarily provides voltage conversion within a protective enclosure. The supplied package may include selected accessories or protective devices, but the precise scope must be stated.

Specify the complete equipment boundary

For either arrangement, confirm the included switchgear, protection, access provisions, ventilation and environmental requirements. The equipment description and drawings should make the supply boundary clear.
