Inductance in a power circuit
A reactor uses the inductance of a winding to oppose changes in current. Its function depends on its connection and the electrical duty for which it is designed.
Series, shunt and filter duties
Series reactors can limit current. Shunt reactors absorb reactive power, while filter reactors work with other circuit elements to address selected harmonics. Smoothing reactors reduce ripple in DC circuits.
Matching the application
Air-core and iron-core arrangements offer different magnetic characteristics. Selection considers current, inductance, insulation, heating and the relevant power-frequency or harmonic duty.
